The Local Area
Elmpt is the nearest village to “camp”. I’ve walked and cycled there. There are plenty of places for grocery shopping including a fruit and vegetable stall, a farm shop and numerous supermarkets.
Brüggen is the nearest small town. It’s a picturesque town with some pretty traditional buildings, a castle and most importantly an ice-cream parlour. In my first week I was introduced to the KS1/FS department traditional of going to Brüggen after school for an ice-cream. See evidence below. I’m told one has to make the most of this before the ice-cream parlours shut for the winter so when I cycled to Elmpt the other weekend I had to sample the ice-cream there too. Well I deserved it after all that peddling!
Roermond is the nearest town for shopping and is in The Netherlands so unfortunately I don’t get to practice my German. Luckily the Dutch are great at speaking English as I’m having enough trouble mastering a few words of German without confusing the issue by adding Dutch. On Saturday mornings they have a good market where I’ve bought some great fruit and vegetables and some excellent bread.
